Hi, I'm Julia. I am first and foremost a human being, interested in our common humanity with a belief that we are all doing the best we can. (No one gave us a manual!)
I have a BA in Psychology from the University of Cambridge, and a Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of East London. I am registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health & Care Professions Council (registered name: Julia Lay) and am registered with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
My work is underpinned by two principles that I believe are key to almost all psychological therapies:
- creating space/distance from which to observe thoughts and feelings
- creating space around emotions
I draw on psychodynamic, systemic, narrative, solution-focused, cognitive-behavioural, mindfulness and self-compassion approaches. I tailor my approach to the individual and occasionally follow my intuition to do something different if that feels right to all involved.
I have 10 years' experience of working as a therapist in mental health services of various kinds in the NHS in London, 5 of those years as a Clinical Psychologist. Most of my post-qualification work has been with children and adolescents and their families, whilst my most recent post was working with adults in Moray with common mental health challenges.
