Autism Assessment For Children

What Are Signs Of Autism In A Child?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect a child’s social interaction, communication and behaviours. Signs of ASD often appear in early childhood and can vary widely, reflecting the “spectrum” nature of autism. Common indicators include:

Impaired Social Interactions

Children with autism may struggle to understand social cues such as facial expressions, body language or tone of voice. They may find it hard to make eye contact, build friendships or engage in back-and-forth conversations.

Communication Difficulties

Some children may have delayed language, limited vocabulary or difficulty starting and maintaining conversations. Others may have strong language skills but struggle with gestures, tone or understanding non-verbal communication.

Strong Need For Predictability

Many children with autism prefer repetitive activities and have focused interests in specific topics or objects. Changes to routines or unexpected events can feel overwhelming and cause distress.

How Does A Child Assessment For Autism Work?

Step 1 - Initial Consultation With The Little Bee Clinic

You and your child start with an initial consultation, where we discuss your concerns and reasons for seeking an ASD assessment. We will make sure to explain the process to ensure a full assessment is appropriate.

Step 2 - ASD Child Questionnaire

Parents, teachers, and sometimes the child complete ASD questionnaires designed to capture behaviours, social interaction and sensory experiences. These help our clinicians gather a fuller understanding of your child’s needs before the observational assessment.

Step 3 - Child ASD Assessment

Your child participates in the ADOS‑2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) with trained clinicians, using structured activities to assess social communication and behaviour. Parents or caregivers also complete the ADI‑R (Autism Diagnostic Interview) to provide developmental history and context.

Step 4 - Feedback Session

Once assessments are complete, we hold a feedback session to explain the findings and whether a diagnosis of autism is indicated. This is also an opportunity to ask questions and discuss next steps.

Step 5 - Written Report

You will receive a detailed assessment report within a few weeks, summarising observations, results and recommendations. One set of amendments can be requested and a copy can also be sent to your GP if required.

Step 6 - Follow-Up

Additional follow-up appointments are available if you want further discussion or therapeutic support to help your child process the results and learn coping mechanisms. This can include practical guidance, such as strategies on how to help a child with autism calm down, manage emotions or navigate social situations.
